When we first start to use credit, we tend to be very careful about how we use it. We might have an apartment, a credit card, and perhaps a car. Then we move ahead in the world and our financial world increases and widens. We become more involved with credit. Some of us are able to survive and thrive in this world; some of us are not. It’s possible that we permit our difficulties “sneak” up on us.

One day we realize that something isn’t right with our finances. We might notice that our credit card balances are exorbitant. Perhaps we can’t make some important payments. There might be a crisis that forces us to examine our finances, like serious illness, or job loss. When there is this kind of event in our lives, we need credit repair.

We need to thoroughly investigate our finances, figure out where we are making money mistakes and develop a plan to remediate the serious situation. First of all, are we spending more than we make? Yes, it can easily happen particularly when we have available credit, loan options, generous families, or ability to borrow from a savings account. Before we know it, we might be living a lifestyle that we cannot afford. You need credit repair.

Often, we might actually be using financial manipulations such as using credit or loans to pay utility bills, phone bills and others for which we should be using money. You need credit repair.

Cash should also be used for our everyday expenses including food, clothes, gas. We shouldn’t be using credit. Consider that a lot of these things will be used and gone before we even receive the bill. If we don’t pay our credit card bills in full, this is not a good practice. You need credit repair.

Surprisingly, many people will use credit when they have the available cash. Some of us must need to know we have cash on us. If we’re not careful, we can easily become careless with our payment patterns. Then we feel surprised that our credit cards are “maxed.” Soon we can fall into the habit of paying some bills and not others. Financially we are in crisis. Credit repair is needed.

Some people will use one card to pay for another, transfer balances, over extend themselves with loans. These attempts are not the solution. They increase the problem. You need credit repair.

Does the material you have just read sound familiar to you. If you see your financial habits here, you must look at your pattern of debt and spending habits. You need credit repair now.

You found yourself in a very bad financial situation. You may feel emotional, hopeless, guilty or all of them. You are afraid of hitting rock bottom. Before that happens, you need to take the necessary steps to get your financial life in order. You need to look long and hard at your credit use and spending habits. It doesn’t mean a “debt consolidation,” program or a home equity loan .The word is PLAN.

Round up all credit reports, bill payment and credit card records, loan and mortgage records. You can find debt worksheets on line that will assist with making your plan. Most likely sections of your planning will be occurring at the same time.

Be meticulous about ensuring that your credit reports (there are 3 major credit reporting agencies) are accurate and truly reflect your credit status. To complete this project may take some written communications with one or all of the credit reporting agencies. Stay with the process.

Record in black and white all of your financial obligations. This will affect the money management part of the plan. Do list all credit cards in order of highest to lowest interest rates. Also include the monthly minimum payment required for each card.

After this, you are going to look at the picture of “disposable income” and “discretionary income.” What are these? You have a certain amount of your salary that pays for your necessary expenses such as loans, utilities, mortgages, insurances, and credit cards. This is disposable income. Subtract the total from salary and this is discretionary income which is the amount you have to assign to reducing debt.

Determine which credit cards and loans you can pay down in order. For the first on the list, pay as much over minimum as possible. Pay minimum on the others. When the first is completed, apply that payment to the next in line and so on. This will be an ongoing money management strategy for a long time.

There will be some personal discomfort as you tackle this project. There will need to be changes in your lifestyle. You will need to cease purchasing that is not essential. You will need to stop charging, pay bills on time, minimize travel and entertainment, dine more at home and perhaps give up other indulgences.

Your current situation was not something that “happened “to you. You are responsible for creating it and you are responsible for repairing it. It wasn’t created overnight. It won’t be fixed overnight.

If you have recently been denied credit or plan to apply for credit soon, it would be wise to obtain your credit report. You know that it is a document that is the foundation of a decision on whether you will receive credit.

We can obtain copies of our credit report for free, on an annual basis, from the three major credit reporting agencies: Experian, TransUnion, and Equifax. Go to annualcreditreport.com to obtain these copies. Please request reports from all 3 agencies because they may differ.

The reports will have several sections. Know that there will not be personal private information about your race, worth, or salary included. There will be the usual identifying such as name, address, social security number in the first section.

Any of your credit lines will be included. Such items will include loans, mortgages, credit cards, department store and gas cards. This section will show when the account was opened, credit limits, monthly payments, payment history ( late payments also), unpaid child support and overdrawn bank accounts.

Credit reporting agencies also receive information from the court system. This section will have a listing of bankruptcies, liens, judgments, divorce.

Any time you apply for a loan or credit card there will be an inquiry made to a credit reporting agency. Your credit report will include not only these inquiries but inquiries by you. Credit inquiries remain for 2 years.

If the information on your credit report is positive, this is to your benefit. If the report has negatives, this information will remain for 7 years. A bankruptcy remains for 10 years.

It is highly recommended that we obtain and seriously review our credit reports to be aware of differences on each report, locate any and all errors. It is up to each individual to monitor his/her own credit profile, fix errors, and repair personal credit.

We all should know that good credit is a “must have.” However, if you have recently been shocked to see your bank statement, credit card bills, don’t seem to have enough cash to manage all your obligations, or been denied credit, it’s time to examine your financial situation.

You may be quite fearful about looking at your credit report, but you need to bite the bullet and be proactive about seeing this document(s). No one can do this for you and there is no magic for fixing the situation without your involvement.

Everyone understands that their ability to get a loan, a mortgage, credit card depends on a good credit rating. Our “Credit Score” is most affected by our total debt and credit cards. You also need to know that there are other negative effects of poor credit that you may not know about.

These are some of the unpleasant effects of poor credit:

1. Denial of /or high interest rates on loans and credit cards 2. Denial of car loans 3. Denial of life, health, homeowner’s insurance 4. Denial of cell phone contract 5. Employment denial 6. Inability to start your own business

Our financial world can be successful or miserable, but credit is the basis for our personal financial world and we need credit. Therefore, if you have defaulted (or are close), are having cash flow problems, large credit repair balances, credit repair is a necessity.

There are 3 major credit reporting bureaus and you can research the way to secure your report(s). It is possible for you to fix your credit. Compare your reports, and dispute any errors that you find. The Fair Credit Act will be a helpful document for you. It addresses consumer rights.

Contact your current creditors, explain the situation. If your creditors realize that you want to pay your debts, they will be much more likely to work with you. Regaining good credit is work and only you know whether you will be able to do the repair yourself. There is a lot of information to help you.

The Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) is written as a protection for the consumer and not the credit reporting agencies. Please see www.ftc.gov/s/statutes/fcradoc.pdf for details of this important act.

by Rob Kosberg

The Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) is written as a protection for the consumer and not the credit reporting agencies. Please see www.ftc.gov/s/statutes/fcradoc.pdf for details of this important act.

The FCRA is the basis for what we are entitled to see and the rights that we have as consumers with the credit reporting bureaus. Keep in mind that these credit bureaus are private businesses that need to “make a profit.” Therefore we have a right to know what their respective reports are saying about us.

As you have previously learned, there is a variety of information on your credit reports. Some of this information is accurate while some may be inaccurate. These reports may have outdated and completely false claims which can ruin your credit without you knowing it.

In a nutshell, the FCRA says that the only “negative information” that can remain on your credit reports is only that which can be proved as true. This is the reason the FTC (Federal Trade Commission) says that we can fix our credit ourselves and don’t need to seek an “overnight credit fix” from some less than reputable agency.

When you review your credit reports, mark any information that you plan to dispute as inaccurate. Sorry, but if it’s true it has to stay. Then you will make your case for why the marked items are false

You will then put together all your documentation for your claims that information is inaccurate. This data is your proof. Send to the credit bureau(s). They must respond and they must prove that the information is true.

If you feel that this process is definitely something that you cannot complete yourself, you might be considering “credit counseling.” Please Beware of companies that advertise ability to change your credit score almost overnight. If it sounds too good, it’s probably true. Also, you may be required to pay a high “up front” fee and a monthly fee. Remember, these agencies are also businesses that need to make money. These could be SCAMS.

You can be sure that there are honest companies and people who will provide help. Try finding referrals from others to help find a reputable person who will address your needs.

Someday we wake up and have the “aha” moment that lets us know that we are in some serious difficulties. Our clue may be the sense that something is financially wrong. The clue could also be a close look at our credit balances. It is also possible that a financial crisis is the tipping point for us to realize something has to change. You need credit repair.

We need to examine our financial habits to find out where we are not being financially savvy and develop our plan for fixing the situation. The first thing you want to learn is if you are actually spending more than you make. Many of us are living “above our means” in varying degrees. This might not sound plausible, but it happens. We use credit, borrow savings, loans. You can go on doing this for awhile, but you will end up in a financial “black hole.” Now what?

People will do other things like using credit, loan money to pay bills like utilities and to make other purchases. These are not good money management techniques and will dig the hole deeper.

So, if you recognize your financial habits here, you will know that you need to seriously take a look at your debt and spending habits. You need credit repair and debt management ASAP.

First of all, you are going to need to collect all your credit reports, credit card and bill payment records, mortgage and loan information. It is likely that some of your repair activities will be going on simultaneously. Debt worksheets are available online to help you.

Make sure your credit reports are accurate. This may involve some written communications with one or the other of the three major credit bureaus. Be persistent.

ALL of your financial obligations must be recorded in writing. This will be important for the money management part of the plan. All credit cards can be listed according to highest to lowest interest rate. Write down the minimum monthly payment on each card.

Decide which credit cards, and loans that you will pay down in order. For the first one you decide to pay down, pay as much more than minimum as you can. Pay the minimum on the others. When the first is paid off, start applying that same amount to the next debt in line. It won’t be a fast process.

There will be some personal discomfort as you tackle this project. There will need to be changes in your lifestyle. You will need to cease purchasing that is not essential. You will need to stop charging, pay bills on time, minimize travel and entertainment, dine more at home and perhaps give up other indulgences.

The bottom line of the situation is that you are responsible for creating it. There is no credit angel. You need to fix it and use smart money management techniques to maintain your repairs.

You may come to the decision that going through repairing your own credit is not something that you can complete without some outside help. There is no shame in having to locate some help because of your emotional reactions or poor money management ability.

When you open a newspaper or go online you will find an abundance of agencies with magical sounding claims about fixing your credit immediately if not sooner. You should be able to tell right away that such claims are nonsense. So, while you’re surfing the net you notice that there are some claims to offer you a choice of agencies that, after you give them some of your information, will call you with help. They will call, but not right away. Then they will call again and again. Some may even b e nasty with you.

This third party choice will require some sleuthing on your part before you can comfortably make a selection. Comparison shopping skills are in order for this venture. Before you make your choice you need to ask some questions.

There will still be more research needed before you will be ready to choose your agency. You will need to know what is “must have” information. You should get information from more than one agency. Comparison shopping is definitely in order.

Any agency that you contact should be more than willing to explain how they operate, the services they provide, cost structure, any other available help without knowing any of your personal information.

When you find an agency that responds to your satisfaction during a first contact you can then ask further questions. You’re going to want to find out how the process may affect your credit report, debt management services, additional money management help. You also need to know how the agency will keep you informed about their activities.

One of the most important pieces of information you will need to know is about any FEES CHARGED by the agency. Some may require large sums of money upfront along with large monthly fees. How could this work for you if you already can’t pay your debts. Make sure you can handle any fees charged even if the agency says it is not for profit.

It is apparent that finding the right credit repair agency will take some work from you, the payoff will be finding the right match for you.

It is time for us to dig in and learn about how our credit scores affect us. Our credit score is a very important 3 digit number. Some of us actually have no idea what our score is. Sure we know that if our score is too “low,” it’s possible we will have difficulty getting a mortgage, automobile loan, credit card or any other kind of loan. These are the “biggies.” We must increase our understanding of our score and the possibly unknown effects of a poor score.

First of all, if your score is low, you are likely determined to be a “credit risk.” In this case, if you are able to secure a mortgage at all, you will be paying an interest rate for your home that will be significantly higher than what is the usual for a mortgage. The amount of interest will cost you thousands over the term of the loan.

In addition to the “normal” loans we all know about, the credit score can affect you in a number of ways that you may never have thought about. Now is the time to learn about these areas.

When you apply for car insurance, the companies will utilize a credit profile for writing the policy. It seems that Homeowner’s insurance companies have decided that, if you have poor credit, you will probably make more claims. So, up go the rates. Now you can start to realize that our credit profile is becoming more influential in our lives.

A very large concern is our health care and life insurance. Credit profile is again important. When people are unable to keep up the payments for these insurances, insurance company costs rise and so do our rates. Again, poor credit can be affecting these rates.

If you have been denied employment, it is very possible that the employer checked your credit rating. If that rating is poor, the employer may suspect that you would not be a good employee (being dishonest, stealing, taking bribes). So, a poor score might cost you a job.

Our country is having a credit crisis. It will be more difficult than ever to get credit. Therefore, if you credit score is low and you are a “credit risk,” you need credit repair. You may be in for a negative surprise so you need to get to work.

Please do not ignore your personal financial situation. Remember all the areas of life that are affected by poor credit so work on fixing your situation.

by Rob Kosberg

If you know that you are what is called a “credit risk,” you probably are feeling that as a derogatory connotation. That can be the motivating factor for you to explore the return to good credit.

It is actually possible for you to travel the “repair road” with yourself as the driver. However, when setting out on this trip, you will need a triptik to break down the milestones on the way.

There are some basic steps that need to be taken to solve the credit problems that are occurring. Initially, know your credit score. A score over 700 is known to be “good.” A 3 digit number under 700 can be problematic. Find out this information via your credit score.

You can gather this information by securing your credit reports. Don’t be afraid to look at them. They will provide essential information. Arrange to get these reports from the Credit Bureaus. There are 3 credit bureaus: Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion. You are entitled to a free report from each once a year. There is a charge for the credit score. See www.annualcreditreport.com for details.

It is possible that each of these reports may actually be different. Therefore, it is very important to obtain all three report for comparison.

Review each report for errors after you finish comparing them. Then, you will need to DISPUTE THE ERRORS with each of the three bureaus. This will require patience and persistence.

Document all errors, and the reasons why you know they are errors and send this in writing (with a copy of the credit report) to any or all, if needed, credit bureaus. Definitely retain COPIES OF EVERYTHING for your records.

This is essential information for you to have because there may be some unexpected surprises on those reports. Stay with the process, confront the issues.
